Sunday, July 25

Well, already, it's Beth's last day in KC.

We have a big breakfast -- I make bacon as a special treat, then my famous cheese omlet and toast. Beth spends the next two hours enjoying breakfast.

I'm working, going to print out Beth's blog for everyone in Columbus, and then we'll start packing.

How did the time go so quickly?

Saturday, July 24

It starts out as a beautiful day -- hot and bright.

After a little breakfast, we get ready for swimming: The Billingsley crew is coming over and another family, the Binghams, who have two girls the same ages as Lily and Poppy. Patsy comes by, too, and she brings along a little terrier that she rescued from the freeway near her office. It's a cute little thing, and Lily wanted to adopt it but her parents said no.

We had snacks with all the kids and they drew great chalk pictures all around the pool -- an octupus, several butterflies, hearts, peace symbols!

Everyone had a great time. Beth really liked the Binghams, she talked to them nonstop. When she was introduced to Scott Bingham, she said, "Oh, I have a brother named Scott ..." and then launched into the entire raft of memories about Scott!

After they all left, we got cleaned up to go to the grocery, bank and post office. We had to get a few things for a little party that night.

But all afternoon, it poured! Heavy storms, right up to about 6 p.m.

Beth looked really nice. She wore Phuong's pretty leopard-print top with a pair of black slacks, and I fixed her hair a little. She was really chatty with everyone and loved it when I put the food on the table.

She turned in a little after 9, she could barely keep her eyes open. But what fun!

Friday, July 23

Friday -- you know what that means! Time for another Rotary meeting!

Beth realizes that it will be her last one, and tells everyone so. She's very bright and cheerful this morning, a little less shy. She stands up and waves when she is introduced to everyone.

She just loves it, she talks about it the rest of the day.

Back at home, she works on her art while I'm working nearby. The hits keep playing over and over: James Taylor and Carole King, then KD Lang, volume 1 and 2, then James Taylor Greatest Hits. Sometimes Sarah, Simply Red, but those are the staples that she plays over and over on this trip.

I go to meetings in the afternoon, and Beth goes with Tom to visit Andrea. There's a little party at her place, so Beth gets a second buffet -- this time for lunch. She really likes it, although I heard two stories about how many chips and dip she had. Tom said she got a plateful, with a huge glop of dip. Beth said she had just a few, not many, and just a dab of dip. Hmmmmm.

Back at home in the afternoon, it's another pool day. I work outside while Beth swims. She really has a good workout today, in the water until about 6:15 p.m. when the pool guys come to clean up.

We decide to take it easy for dinner. I have some shrimp with cocktail sauce and we order a pizza.

By the time we're done with that, it's time for the evening clean up and bed!

Thursday, July 22

A nice hot morning again.

Beth has cereal and peaches and coffee for breakfast, and helps out with sweeping the floors in the kitchen and dining room.

This morning, I tell Beth about the weekend -- getting her ready for the trip back home. She's crestfallen at first. "Oh no, Nancy," she says, "ohhhhhh." But we keep talking and she starts getting excited. She's really excited for the California trip. "Ken and Phuong are going and they're taking me too," she says. "All of us, all three of us, are going to California!"

We see that Scott is online, so we get to have a little video conference with him. We see Jeff and the kitty and doggies, too. Beth has a long chat with Scott.

After that, it's time for the pool. I work outside while she swims. She practiced every stroke -- sidestroke, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle. A little bit of diving, even.

Later, I have to go to work, so she gets ready for Curves. Tom takes her and runs errands while she's working out.

By the time I get home, they're all home too. We're having dinner at home -- tonight it's rice with grilled chicken and veggies, a little teriyaki sauce. Still some leftover birthday cake for dessert.

A quiet day.

Wednesday, July 21

Yes, a very busy day today.

I have to be out nearly all day, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., so Beth stays with the Birthday Guy all day.

She makes Tom a card, which promises presents. They go to Aixois together to do some work. The guys in the kitchen say hello to Beth and are very nice to her, she is very shy and makes them laugh and then she giggles, too.

They go to the post office and then it's off to Curves.

After that, time for a swim. The day is hot and blustery. It takes Beth a long time to get into the pool. She inches her way in and stands forever in one place. Finally, she swims and practices all the strokes she knows: backstroke, butterfly, underwater, etc.

When I'm finally home from a long hectic day, we decide what to do for Tom's birthday. Guesses? O'Dowds! Eddie is playing, so we know it will be fun.

We have fish and chips, and a Guinness. We find some friends are there too, and one of the gals from the Irish Center is celebrating her birthday, too! She shares her birthday cake with us. Beth eats hers before dinner! Eddie led the crowd in his own happy birthday song for both of them; he also sang the Nancy song (like always).

After O'Dowds, we stopped by to see what was up at Aixois. We sat at the bar and chatted with our friends there -- one from Turkey, one from Czechoslovakia. It was a late night for Bethie, all for Tom's special day.

Another hot day!

Beth and I have breakfast, then I'm off to a meeting. By the time I'm back, it's time for the pool.

Beth swims most of the afternoon. I work in my outdoor, poolside office nearby.

In the afternoon,we go out to meet a friend, Sarah and her sister, Lucy. Lucy and Beth are remarkably similar -- the same size, born the same year, the same glasses, even haircuts look the same. Lucy has three brothers, just like us, and she has two sisters.

Lucy's favorite hobby is making hooked rugs -- that used to be Beth's favorite, too. Lucy is a sweet girl, shy with us, but also interested. She thought it was neat that Beth has three bedrooms -- one in KC, one at Mike's, and one at Ken's. We took along one of Beth's pictures to show them what she likes to do.

We all had some ice cream and chatted a bit. We learned that Lucy lives in a group home with three roommates and 24/7 care. She's also part of a program that has activities every day -- all kinds of things, going to movies, visiting the zoo or the farm, playing games. Her family takes her for visits on the weekends. Sarah said it's been great for Lucy, with good care at the group home.

It was a fun meeting until a big storm threatened and we figured we'd better get home before it hit. I think Beth and Lucy can become friends and might enjoy spending some time together. Lucy said she'd like to see our house. We'll arrange another meeting in November.

It was a huge storm! We had dinner at home while the rain fell. We had planned to go to Poppy's T-ball game, but the rain canceled that.

Tomorrow is a busy day.

Monday, July 19

Well, I had a busy day and barely got to see Beth at all!

I set up breakfast for her, but had to leave before she made it downstairs. I would be gone most of the day, until about 3:30 p.m. so she spent the day with Tom.

After breakfast, they went to the bookstore. He made sandwiches and beans for lunch, and then took her to Curves in the afternoon.

She had a good workout at Curves, nearly an hour, and then chatted nonstop. I think she had a good day!

After my run, Beth and I made dinner. Beth set the table and got everything ready inside, while I took care of the grill. We had Kansas City strip steaks, mushrooms on the grill, grilled corn on the cob, and asparagus (yes, on the grill). It was delicious!

Beth had some birthday cake for dessert, and then it's off to bed. She just finished her shower and now is all tucked in for the night.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Hot, hot, hot!

A steamy morning, so a light breakfast. Well, maybe not for everyone -- Beth had a waffle and yogurt with her coffee. We noticed that Scott was online, so we had nice little video conference with him this morning.

I went for a run before it got too hot, and then headed for the pool. We all went out to play in the pool for a while.

Then we had to go to the grocery, and then tried to get a little work done before our family dinner. Dinner was at Patsy's house, just us and the Billingsley crew -- Lily, Graham, Poppy, Margo, Erin and Drew. Brian, Pam and Simon are in Canada visiting Pam's family.

Dinner doubled as a birthday party (early) for Tom. We had birthday hats all around, and we sang Happy Birthday to Tom. Plus, of course, cake and ice cream. Beth really enjoyed the dinner.

Now, home again. Beth's in bed.

Saturday, July 17, 2010

Saturday, July 17

Ahhh, Saturday!

We sleep in a little (I'm up to get some work done) but it's leisurely.

Beth has a nice little cereal and banana and coffee and yogurt for breakfast; I'm working then go for a run.

We see that Scott is online and we get to have a video conference with him. That's so much fun! We get to see Freeway chewing on him! Beth and Scott have a nice chat; she is so excited to come visit him in California.

A little later, we go to run errands - to the bank, to the post office, to Target. Beth gets some new undies, a polo shirt, some shampoo. Nothing much, but fun shopping and looking around.

When we get home, the temperature says 94 degrees. That means time for the pool!

Again, Beth does a few laps and swims a bit before relaxing on the float. I'm working, but take a dip every little bit to keep me going. When I'm done, I join her on the floats and we take a nap!

Then, it's time for dinner! We decide to celebrate Bastille Day, so it's off to Aixois. We get there just in time -- it's busy! We have a wonderful meal and Beth looks so pretty -- she is so happy and having such a good time! I take a photo on my cell phone and send it to Scott (Hope you got it!).

Beth has Rotisserie chicken breast with lemon and herbs, salad and pommes frites -- the best in KC. Oh, she loves it! It was a really good meal.

Back at home, it's turning into night. So time for Beth to get ready for bed again!

Friday, July 16

Oh boy! Another week. We finish it out with another visit to the Rotary Club for breakfast. Everyone greets Beth, and she shakes hands nicely. She says "good morning" and gets very shy. But everyone loves to see her.

After that, I had to go to work. I set Beth up on my laptop to write an email to you all. When I came back, this is what she had:

Dear Mike, Scott and Ken,

Hi how are you to day enjoy your day is it hot out there iwent to rotary we b reakffast bu ff et

Oh well, it was hot -- about 90 degrees and bright and sunny. Time for the pool!

I helped Beth get in and encouraged her to do some laps before lounging. She loved it! She was in the pool the rest of the afternoon, all the way until the dark clouds came in and it started to thunder. Whoa! That took us inside.

It was but a short rainshower, followed by a rainbow.

But by now, it was time for dinner. We had broiled salmon (with a soy-honey-ginger marinade I made), salad and fresh asparagus. Just right!

Now time to close out. Beth's gone up to get ready for bed.

Thursday, July 15

Isn't it always a good day when you get to start it with a homemade waffle for breakfast?

Beth seemed to think so. She savored every bite!

I had a meeting out over lunch, so we were at home in the morning and the afternoon. Beth was home with Tom while I was gone. At about 3 p.m.,Beth went back to visit her friends at Curves. I think she had a good workout.

It was hot here! Sunny and steamy. We told Patsy we'd meet her and the kids for a little shopping at an entrepreneur's stand from her work. We met there -- Poppy, Graham and Lily -- and bought a couple of little things to help out the kids from the city. They were selling crafts they'd made. We got a little birdbath and a couple of bows.

Then, off to the grocery for us. (We were out of coffee -- can't have that.) We went to the grocery store in Prairie Village; nearby, but I'm not really familiar with it. I couldn't find anything and forgot half the stuff we were going to get.

At home, I made dinner. We had a nice big omelet with ham, asparagus, tomato and feta cheese. Yummy! Plus a Caesar salad and some watermelon.

Then time to get ready for bed!

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Wednesday, July 14

Happy Bastille Day! Not that we're celebrating, just thought I'd mention it.

Beth had toast, fruit and juice for breakfast; I had to go off to work for part of the afternoon. She stayed home with Tom, just hanging around.

When I got home, she finally decided to go swimming. (It took her forever to get ready!) It's a great pool day, nice and hot, makes the water feel great. When she finally got in the water, she headed straight for the lounger! No way! I encouraged her to do some laps, and with a bit resting in between, she did several. No dives today, though.

In the afternoon, about 5 p.m., we got ready to go visit Andrea at her assisted living home, where they were having a big Hawaiian Luau. There was a band, and dancing, and an open buffet. Beth had a little plate of snacks while we visited with Andrea. Vince was there too, so we got to catch up with him, too.

Then, home again! We had the last of the leftovers for dinner. (No complaints!)

That's it for another day.

Tuesday, July 13

Today, after breakfast we were able to catch up with Scott for a video conference. That was fun, especially when she finally got chatty and excited about her upcoming visit to California. She hardly ever stops talking about it here!

It's a gorgeous day, so after breakfast, Beth changes into her swimming suit and goes out to the pool. She goes on a visit with Tom in the afternoon, while I'm at an appointment, and then when she comes back, it's back to the pool again. I'm getting her to practice her diving and do laps, especially since it was too late to go to Curves today. She does a few and then makes her way over to the side, where she discusses whatever's on her mind for a while until she's ready to go back in again and repeat the process.

Pan is hot but is starting to enjoy being outside with us. She's been so good -- she stays under my chair or nearby, and follows me if I go inside. This might work out after all!

Almost time for dinner; I'll finish this up later.

We had picnic foods for dinner -- fresh tomatoes with basil and goat cheese, watermelon, brats and burgers, etc.

Beth did a good job of getting herself ready for bed.

But then, a shock at 10:30 p.m. I come up to turn in to bed, and there's Beth -- fully dressed, washed, bed made, preparing to come downstairs. She wouldn't believe me that it was still night, and she resisted going back to bed. She was a bit agitated.

I showed her that it was still dark outside and asked her to read the digital clock carefully. She finally understood that it was night time still; we went through the whole process of getting ready for bed again.

Monday, July 12

How can this month be half-way done already?

Oh well. You know it's a good day when you get to start it with fresh Peach Cobbler. That's what Beth had for breakfast. Plus coffee and toast.

I worked from home until the afternoon, and then had to go to work and stay there for an evening meeting until about 7 p.m.

Beth was swimming in the day, and then went to Curves with Tom in the afternoon. Then when I got home, we had a nice dinner (leftovers). Beth is doing a nice job setting the table for us and sweeping up almost every day.

After dinner, it was time for bed already!

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Big rains today!

The sky got really dark in the morning and we had a giant rainstorm. Then it cleared up a little, then it rained again. Over and over, it was like this.

Beth just kept tabs on the weather from her spot by the window. Oh, it's clearing up. Then a little while later, Oh, it's coming down wet again!

I went out to grill some chicken for dinner, and of course, I picked exactly the wrong time and it started raining again. I had to stand under an umbrella while cooking on the grill!

But, by the time for dinner, it turned into a beautiful day. The kids came over and played in the pool before dinner. We even ate outside, it was so nice.

Dinner was chicken-olive-feta pizzas on pita bread, with spanikopitas, salad and the last of the hummus. We had peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert.

And then another day is done!

Saturday, July 10

Well, I solved the mystery of the missing coffee cup.

I should explain: Beth always uses her favorite coffee cup, the one with kitties playing all round, happy and frisky. Yesterday, we couldn't find it. Beth looked everywhere -- in her bedroom, at her desk, the dining room, outside? Nowhere to be found.

It was in the microwave oven!

I found it this morning as I was making coffee and wondering what alternate cup she might want. It struck me -- she loves to keep reheating her coffee and she sometimes forgets what she's doing... well, that's what had happened.

This morning, she came down in sweat pants, a shirt and sweater. I told her how hot and sunny it is and suggested she try shorts and a T-shirt. She went upstairs to change and came back down in the same thing. She'd forgotten why she went up. So try again -- this time, she put on a short sleeve t-shirt, with the sweater over it. We put away the sweater. This is part of the reason it takes her so long to get ready. Even when I lay out clothes for her the night before, she forgets in the morning.

More later -- it's a beautiful day.

Folks came over for a little party today, starting about 3 p.m. We had kids swimming in the pool (Bethie too). We had some music playing, watermelon and snacks, and then dinner from the grill -- brats, burgers and chicken -- plus hummus, green bean salad, potato salad and beans.

Most folks stayed until sundown. It was fun!

Friday, July 9

Got Beth up early so she could go to the Rotary meeting with me for breakfast. Everyone knows her and greets her by name, and just in case they don't, she is introduced to the group. She stands up and waves.

Afterward, back at home, it's music and art in the morning.

In the afternoon, it's a bright, sunny, gorgeous day and the pool calls! Beth changes and spends the afternoon outside swimming, relaxing and reading. She found a book here on Gnomes and she actually read it all. She read out loud, quietly, to herself and occasionally giggled. I was glad to see that because with her other books, she just carries them around -- I had never seen her open them and actually read them. I'm glad she still likes to read; I think we just have to make sure it's something that interests her.

It was such a nice day, when I was done with my meetings, I moved my office outside too. We were all outside when Brian, Pam and Simon dropped by. There was lots of laughing and splashing going on -- Simon is really enjoying the pool!

For dinner, I grilled some chicken and veggies and mixed it all up with some pasta and feta cheese and fresh herbs from my garden. We finished off the watermelon for dessert. A very summery day and dinner.

And off to bed!

July 8, 2010

Beth had a good sleep and was downstairs for breakfast at about 8:30. I had to go to a meeting, and then was out much of the day working, so she was with Tom mostly. Doing housework and chores -- her task is to sweep up. She does a very thorough job.

One of my afternoon meetings was canceled, so I came home earlier than expected. We were able to do a video conference with Scott, which was really fun. We got to see Scott and Jeff, and the doggies and the kitty, Freeway. Beth liked talking about his peanut-shaped pool and said she can't wait to go visit out there with Ken and Phuong. Beth showed Scott some of her exercises at Curves.

And then it was off to Curves! She had a good late afternoon workout and then it was time to get ready for dinner.

I had joined a group for Siblings with Down, and it was our social night. We met out at Cactus Grill out south. There were three other folks there and they all enjoyed meeting Beth. It was a fun dinner.

Then home, late, so off to bed!

Thursday, July 8, 2010

July 7, 2010

Beth has definitely established a pattern in her schedule here, sleeping in a bit.

She always has fruit and coffee for breakfast, and today it was cereal, too. She gets her little desk set up and then chooses her music. Her current favorite is a tie between the new Carole King-James Taylor "Live at the Troubadour" album and KD Lang's "Recollections." She plays them both, over and over and over.

I had to go out to work, so Beth stayed with Tom. It's another rainy day again. They decide to go shopping, visiting bike shops, and then they stop at Aixois for lunch.

Later when I'm back in the afternoon, Beth gets ready for Curves. And then, by the time she's done with all that and changes clothes again, it's about time for dinner.
Tonight it's one of my experiments -- chicken with olives, cauliflower and salad; watermelon and a cookie for dessert.

And again, time to get ready for bed. Beth takes a shower and gets all set. Good night!

July 6, 2010

Back to work! It's a rainy day.

We are up early, Beth is going to come with me to an all-morning meeting in Lawrence, Kansas. It's a 40 mile drive, so Beth has a banana and some yogurt in the car. She keeps up a non-stop chatter the entire way there. She's laughing and cheerful.

We get there, and Beth joins us in a nice conference room. While I'm meeting with a couple of KU folks, Beth gets to work on her art. She's great, and enjoys the change of scenery. She shakes hands with everyone she meets and is very polite.

On the way back, we stop for a sandwich at Classic Cookie. We bought a few cookies, too. Yummy.

We have lunch at home, and then it's about time for Curves. They open at 3 p.m. and that's a good time to go because it's not too crowded yet. The lady there remembers Beth and starts keeping a log for her. Beth signs in, printing her name neatly on the sheet.

After the exercise, we're back at home, Beth changes and then plays some music and also works on her drawing a bit. I work at my desk in the kitchen with her, and we chatter back and forth.

Then time for dinner, then Beth is off to bed!

July 5, 2010

Another Holiday -- yay!

It was mostly a grey day, some rain and kinda sticky. We didn't have much to do and mostly stayed around the house.

We were outside some. Beth, Pan and I spent some time out in the afternoon in the yard. We tried to call everyone, and finally got to talk to Mike. He sounded great! We sent an email to Scott (from Beth) and Ken called back later when we were out. Oh well, we'll catch up with everyone soon.

In the afternoon, we went over to Erin and Drew's new house for family dinner. Everyone was there: Graham, Lily, Poppy, Margo, Erin, Drew; Brian, Pam, Simon; Patsy, Nancy, Tom and Bethie! Dinner was really nice and Beth had three kinds of dessert -- S'mores, Mississippi Mud and Red-White-&-Blue sugar cookies.

By the time we got home, it was getting dark and we were all tired out! Beth got ready for bed and that was it!

Monday, July 5, 2010

The Fourth of July

Happy Independence Day!

Beth was slow to rise again, even Tom was up before she was! She wore her sparkly t-shirt with the flag and fireworks.

We had breakfast at home, eggs for Tom and French Toast for Beth and me. That sparked her talking about how Scott loves French Toast and always used to have it at home, at the old house on Primrose. She kept up a steady stream of Scott chatter the rest of the morning. Pan was particularly excited watching the birds and critters outside her window today.

After breakfast, Beth and I went on a walk to Loose Park. She even agreed to jog for a couple of blocks and kept a pretty good power walk pace for most of the way. Once we got to the park, we stopped for a break on the swings. "Almost heaven..." she sang.

It was threatening rain most of the day, but we did spend a little time relaxing first in the hot tub and then the pool. Beth enjoyed the hot tub but thought the pool would be too cold.

We had a dinner mostly from the grill -- roasted potatoes, pork tenderloin and asparagus, with homemade fruit turnovers for dessert. And by the end of dinner, it was time for Beth to shower and get ready for bed. By this time, it's raining out and most of the fireworks are abandoned. We saw a couple of flashes in the sky, but most were rained out.

Sunday, July 4, 2010

Saturday, July 3

Bethie must have been tired -- I've never seen her sleep so late. It was after 8 a.m. before she woke up.

She had breakfast and then we went out running errands, here and there. We also went to Target and got her some stuff. When we were ready to leave, it was pouring down rain.

Beth says, "Nancy, where's the umbrella?" Well, it's in the car. "Oh, Nancy!" She was so dismayed. We ran out to the car (a long way, because I always park far from the door where nobody else parks, just to stay away from the crazy drivers). We got soaked!

We remembered Scott's birthday, and called. I hope he liked our singing Happy Birthday on his voicemail.

Later in the afternoon, we stopped by to visit with our friend Max at his house. We'd hoped to sit outside in his garden, but it was still raining. We chatted inside, and then headed home. Beth was getting sleepy.

At home, we ordered a pizza. Beth took a shower, and then when she came down, our pizza was here. Yummy! Then off to bed.

Beth's July 2010 Visit

July 2, 2010

Up early, check the computer for an update on Beth's flight this morning. Wow! It's going to be a half-hour early! I shift into high speed to be able to get out to the airport, through the rush hour traffic. I get there and see the signs change on the board: delayed. Oh well.

She arrives without any difficulty, chattering away, happy as can be. We go home and she gets settled in her room, putting all her stuff out and just the way she likes it.

Then she comes down and gets her station set up at the little French bistro table. She gets out her pens, paper and previous art work. Pens all lined up, in order. Books in the corner. Pile of napkins. Then sort through my CDs until they are in an order that she prefers (well, why should all the classical music be in the same pile?)

Settled in.

We have a little lunch (grilled cheese sandwich and an apple) and then Beth and Tom go off grocery shopping.

When supplies are all put away, it's time for a swim. Beth gets ready and gets in the pool. Ahhhh! She's splashing away, having a great time, giggling all the while. Then on the float -- naptime!

We have grilled orange chicken and mixed veggies, with a little chilled Gewurztraminer. It's a lovely evening.

When we go inside, we see that The Wizard of Oz is showing. Beth is soon singing along ... until she gets tired. Up to bed, 8:30 p.m. It's been a long and fun day.
